“Many Californias”

Creative Expression Assignment

California Literature

“California is elusive.  That’s largely because so many who look for it think they already know where and what it is.  Outsiders are often more certain of their versions than are natives because outsiders are seldom burdened by facts or knowledge of the state’s actual diversity.  They don’t know the many Californias.”

As stated in the course syllabus, one of the primary focuses of this class is to examine the many different perspectives that define California. In order to gain a complete perspective of California, we have to take a closer look at the “many Californias.”  Thus, the purpose of this assignment is for you to develop your own creative interpretation of “Your California.”  The assignment is open for all creative expression.  This includes but is not limit to;

* Artwork

* Poetry

* Music

* Film

* Short Story

* Dance

Your project should clearly illustrate your own personal perspective of California as well as the many different themes and ideas that we have discussed thus far in the class.  Everyone will share their piece with the class and will be expected to offer a brief explanation of their perspective.  All projects will be due Tuesday, March 9th.  The attached rubric will be used in the assessment of this assignment.

C: Some thought was given to the project, however, it lacks insight and originality.  Your perspective isn’t illustrated in your piece and is unclear.

D:  Little thought and insight is reflected in the piece.  It lacks originality and isn’t unique.
